Rule Change regarding "Usable Surface":
The video from USA Climbing on judging sport has a rule clarification that differs from how we have interpreted the rule in the past.  The note reads:  “ In sport climbing, the portion of the handhold defined as “usable surface” by the Routesetler will be the only portion of the handhold that can be controlled by the competitor”.
In past regional championships, judges have awarded control if a climber touched anywhere on a hold for 2 seconds.  That will not be the case at Divsionals or any future USAC sport competition.  Climbers will have to earn control!

SCS Season is almost here!

While the lucky ones are still in bouldering mode preparing for ABS Nationals, SCS season is just around the corner.  The first comp will be at MetalMark in Fresno on Saturday, February 21st.  This is the first SCS comp hosted by MetalMark and a great opportunity to climb in a new gym for many NorCal climbers.  Registration is 9-10 and climbing will be from 10 to 2.  The location and waiver information for this and all SCS comps can be found on our Events page.

NEW THIS YEAR - all local comps will be based on your top 3 climbs, not the top 5 climbs like previous seasons.

Time to dust off your harnesses and get your rope on!

Young Gun Award

The Young Gun Award is one of the most prestigious awards a young climber can receive. If you are an athlete (or parent of an athlete) that has competed in both the ABS & SCS seasons for that last three years, then you are eligible to be nominated for the USAC Young Gun award.  To be nominated, you will need to complete the application form and submit it to your coach(s) and regional coordinators.
Young Gun Award Application
Each certified coach may submit 1 nomination and the regional coordinators can submit 3 nominations.  From this pool of nominations, the USAC young gun selection committee will choose 1 athlete at the ABS National competition to represent our region.  The deadline for submission by the coaches and RCs is 1/16.  Please return your completed forms as soon as possible, January 12th at the latest, so there is time to evaluate the applications.
The criteria for selection are:
  • Commitment to the sport of climbing by having competed for, at least, 3 years in both the ABS and SCS seasons.
  • Demonstrates a leadership/mentorship role that takes places outside of the climbing gym.
  • Demonstrates exemplary sportsmanlike conduct.
  • Demonstrates “service to others” by volunteering within their community.
  • The nominee’s top 6 competition results.
